- 01Honestly, I think open-plan offices cause more problems than they actually solve.
- 02They're usually marketed as a way to boost teamwork, but in practice I find them pretty distracting.
- 03The main issue is that there's basically no barrier between you and everyone else's conversations.
- 04It becomes really hard to concentrate on detailed work when phones are ringing and people are chatting right next to you.
- 05For instance, a friend of mine works at a startup with a totally open layout, and she says she wears headphones all day just to get anything done.
- 06Whenever she needs to focus on a report, she actually books a small meeting room and works alone, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of the open space.
- 07So while open-plan offices might save space and look modern, I don't think they're great for real productivity.
- 08If companies genuinely want people to collaborate, they should build in quiet zones alongside the open areas instead of just tearing down every wall.
